Carmel Technology College,
Darlington (United Kingdom)
Carmel School was formed in September 1974 as the result
of the amalgamation of two Catholic secondary schools. These were St
Mary's Boys' Secondary School and the Immaculate Conception Secondary
School for Girls. The site belonged originally to the Pease family,
a well-known Darlington Quaker family, who made their fortune in railways.
Their country house, which now forms part of the administration area
of the college, dates back to 1864 and is renowned for its ghost, Harriet,
who has scared many a teacher over the years and is much talked about
by the younger pupils!
The college is a mixed R.C. Specialist Technology College
with a wide catchment area across Darlington. At present there are 1060
pupils on roll, aged 11 - 18. We are proud of our outstanding achievements
in many fields - academic, musical, sporting, charity - and we enjoy
many international links, which give our pupils the opportunity to visit
Germany, Hungary, Spain, France, Italy, Slovakia, Poland and Cyprus.
Darlington is a medium-sized market town in the north-east
of England, most famous for the "Locomotion", the first passenger steam
train in the world, which was built by George Stephenson in 1825 to
run between Stockton and Darlington.
