Architecture and Migration: United Kingdom

"Terrific Towers"

Year 8 pupils at Carmel Technology College, Darlington, researched and collected a variety of different styles of architecture from Europe and Asia. The Students included examples of European architecture of particular interest from our partner schools' towns or cities, which were sent via email.

We looked in particular at Byzantine and Moorish architecture and discussed Islamic influences, focusing on eclectic examples such as St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow and the work of Gaudi. Pupils also identified how migration has influenced and changed the decoration, design and materials used in religious buildings and places of worship.

Students brought together their visual research to make an eclectic 2D drawing of a "Terrific tower" which combined different styles of architecture. They identified the best elements and went on to work in teams of four to create a large-scale card relief, using card and string. This tower represents how architecture has changed and been influenced by migration into and around Europe.
