Migration: From Morocco to Germany
Q: What was the reason for your emigration from Morocco?
A: There were several reasons. One reason is that
you cannot lead a good life in Morocco if you aren't rich: You have no chance
of a well-paid job because wages are generally low. In Morocco you only
have a chance if you have money; if you haven't, you end up as a beggar
in the streets.
Q: But why Germany, of all countries?
A: There is no precise reason why I ended up here.
Initially I only wanted to earn a little money and then return home. But
I have got used to the standard of living here in Germany to such a degree
that for me there is no more question of returning. Life in Germany, after
all, is considerably different from Morocco. Here you have a chance of survival,
even if you don't work and have no money. Here in Germany you have welfare
and unemployment benefits, which don't exist in Morocco. I could no longer
imagine to live there, as the legal situation and the living conditions
are so different from here. After all, Morocco is a developing country.
Q: So money was your only reason to emigrate to Germany?
A: Let me say, it was also a reason to come to Germany.
Here's an example: My daughter studied for years and is a qualified teacher
today, she might teach, but she cannot find a job. In Morocco you may have
a doctor's degree and still not find a job, simply because there are not
enough jobs.
Q: Are you happy about your decision to have moved
to Germany?
A: Yes, I'm fine, and most of all, with this decision
I have given my children the opportunity to pass their A-levels, to go
to university and get a well-paid job.
