The Gasometer at Oberhausen

The Gasometer |
It was built in 1928 and 1929 and it is 117 meters high. The furnaces around the gasometer produced gas while producing steel. In the gasometer the furnace gas was stored. Today the gasometer is open to the public in summer and you can climb onto the top of it and look around Oberhausen.

Inside the building exhibitions are shown. Last year you could visit the exhibition "The Wall, made by the artist Christo . He had built a huge wall out of 13000 oil drums. This wall was to show how big the gasometer is. You also could see photos of famous Christo installations in the USA and in Germany. As the furnace gas is very poisonous you are not allowed to touch the inner walls of the gasometer. They are covered.
