The steelworks in the park
|
Where now the "Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord" (Landscape Park
Duisburg North) is, steelworks worked from 1903 to 1985. In 1959 the adjoining
coalmine was closed; in 1977 the cokery followed. Where once many men did their
very hard work, you can now spend your leisure time.

One attraction of the park is one of the old furnaces. You can climb to the top
of it and see where the workers worked and you can feel a little bit of the
dangers they had to fight with. Each year several workers died of the heat. In
the filling of the furnace there were temperatures from 1200 to 1600 °C.
The furnace produced per day 500 to1200 tons of crude iron, 200 to 500 tons of
dross and 2000 to 5000 tons of furnace gas. You needed 600 kgs of coal per ton
of crude iron; 2000 to 5000 tons of air were needed. One of the furnaces was
transported from Duisburg to India. It is still in use there.

Now the park is very attractive for children and adults. There are several nice
playgrounds in the park. In the old ore bunkers you can exercise free climbing.
Many cultural events like dancing festivals or open-air cinema take place in
the old buildings. You can even go diving in the gasometer. At the weekends the
park is illuminated at night.
