Interviews and Project Findings:
Traffic and Transport in Mülheim

"50 years ago, there weren't any buses in Mülheim, only trams, they ran every half hour. From the outskirts of the city to the city centre it cost 20 Pfennigs, and to go to the next city you had to change trams. Most of the people who had a car were managers. The rubbish was picked up by a horsecart and the majority had a bike - without gears."

"In earlier years not many cars were in the streets. The biggest part of the traffic were bicycles and horse carts. The road was often a place for children playing. In 1950 the big car boom started and the road got more and more crowded with cars and motor bikes."

"There were fewer cars than today. People used public transport more often, and in Mülheim this meant the trams more than anything else. But usually people either walked or rode on their bikes. Cars were used for jobs, or they were an expensive privilege because the operating cost was relatively high."
