Leisure Facilities for Young People in Mülheim

In Mülheim, most teenagers meet their friends nearly every day. They often just hang around anywhere, but sometimes they do something they cannot do every day because, you know, we are just about 14 or 15 years old, and most of us do not have a million to spend in their free time. For example our cinema. The Union cinema is easy to reach because it is in the centre of the city. Occasionally, they do some special offers, like a great film at half price. That´s cool. And, their security is not very good in controlling if you really stay in one cinema. If you like to watch a different film, just go to the toilet first, and go into one of the other cinemas and have fun. I do not know if the boys feel the same, but us girls like to go to the malls, like the Forum and the Rhein-Ruhr-Zentrum. We visit H&M or Orsay, Colloseum or Cosmopolitan. Although we do not even buy anything, it is great fun to give yourself a new styling and image. Nearly everyone has got a hobby in Mülheim. We play an instrument, are in a sports club, make some easy money, go to one of our lakes, or do something for our beauty. Some girls are in Dance Club Ritter. Well, you learn great dances there, like video clip dancing. But the disco there is horrible. Normal music, wannabe gangsters and children from age 12. Some are even younger. They call it Late Night Disco, but it ends at 11 p.m. when the normal discos start, and some people even are ashamed to say that they have been there.

In Mülheim are two big shopping centres. One is in the city centre and one in Mülheim-Heißen. The name of the first shopping centre is "Forum", it is in the city. In the Forum are about 120 shops.(for example a pharmacy, an H&M shop, a shoe shop, a cosmetics shops and so on.) In the "Forum" is also a cinema, the "Union cinema". From the Forum you get directly into the city of Mülheim. On one side of the Forum you get to the train station. From there you can go to Essen, Duisburg and Oberhausen for example. Dancing

We can dance in the city of Mülheim in dancing club Ritter. You can join a dancing group with a teacher. You learn to dance to the number one in the music charts, or you can go to the parties with friends or other people. The parties are on the first or second weekend of the month from 7 pm to 11 pm. They play good music there. You can speak with other people, you can dance and you can drink a coke. The teachers are all friendly to the girls and boys in the dance club.. You meet new people and you go out. When you are in a dance group it costs 18 Euros per month. In the rooms is a bar where you can sit.

Tennis

When you want play tennis, then you are right here at the tennis courts. You don't need to be in a tennis club. A tennis court costs 4.50 to 7.50 Euro for one hour. You can rent a court any time all year through, but not all day, only from 10 am- 6 pm. In the summer you play outdoors and in the winter indoors in a hall. The hours in the hall are more expensive. Outdoors you don't need special shoes. There you can wear any shoes. But indoors you need specials shoes, because indoors you haven't got an ash court. Indoors you play on specials floors and therefore you need shoes with flat soles. But you can borrow shoes in tennis clubs. Now you need only a tennis racket. But you can borrow rackets, too.

Football

I spend my free time on my hobby. It is football. I play in a football club. We always play the outside, even when it is raining. I play twice in a week and on the weekends I have got a football match, most of the time Sundays. When I have got my training, then I don't need a special equipment, but when I have got a football match, then I need a special equipment boots and jersey. The name of my football club is "Rot - Weiss Mülheim". Every week you must pay another two euros, and every month you must pay twenty-five euros. I play in the defence. Most of the matches we win.

The Union cinema

This cinema is in the Forum, a big shopping centre in central Mülheim. The cinema has eight theatres and you can pick your own seats (fixed price). Very long films cost extra but the normal price is about 4 euro and older films cost about 1.50. There is a little shop where you can buy things to eat and to drink like popcorn, crisps, coke and other things but they are expensive and so many people buy their things in a supermarket.

Youth clubs

In Mülheim are 3 big youth clubs. A lot of young people go there. There is a nice atmosphere, you meet a lot of friends there. In the youth club you can do everything what the young people like.

Bowling

Bowling is great fun. I go to "Joe's Superbowling", which is in the "Rhein-Ruhr-Zentrum", a big shopping mall in Mülheim. You need special shoes and a bowling-ball to do bowling, but you don't have to be in a club. You can bowl on your own, in a group or in a team.

Free Time on the River Ruhr

When the weather is good, with no rain and a lot of sun, then you have have a picnic on the shore at the Ruhr. You can have a Bar-B-Q and the little children can play on the playground. You can go swimming in the Ruhr, but you are not allowed to do this. You can go by a boat of the so called "Weiße Flotte" (White Fleet) on the river but then you must pay some euros. The boat stops at a lot of different places along the river. On the river are some clubs, for example a waterski club, a rowing club and a canoe club. When you are not interested in sports, then you can go for a walk along the towpath.
